To help make the right choice the key to getting the right Bandsaw Blade is the blade width and the number of teeth on the blade.
The most common widths of Bandsaw blades are 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch and generally using the
widest blade that your Bandsaw can accommodate is the best for straight cutting. Larger Bandsaws may take
5/8", 3/4" or even 1" wide blades. Bandsaw blades blades are measured from the tip of the tooth to the
back edge of the blade. Most bench top Bandsaws are able to accommodate 1/4" and 3/8" width blades but
should you be thinking of using 1/2" wide Bandsaw blades then check that your machine is able to take it.
If you intend to cut curves or radius's with your Bandsaw then a 1/4" wide blade can cut down to a 5/8"
16mm radius. A 3/8" wide blade can cut down to a 1 1/2" 38mm radius. A 1/2" wide blade can cut down to a 2
1/2" 63mm radius.
The number of teeth on a Bandsaw blade will determine the feed rate and more importantly the finish you
require. Virtually all machines are supplied with a 10 tpi blade from new. This is because 10tpi is by far
the nearest thing to general purpose blade that you will get. So if you are replacing the original blade
and you have been happy enough with the cut then just go for a 10tpi of the same width you already have.
Just in case your not sure 10 tpi means you have 10 teeth for every 1" of blade.
The thickness of the material you are cutting can also effect your choice of TPI. You should be aiming to
have at least 3 teeth in the material that you are cutting. So if you need to cut very thin material maybe
under 6mm it may be worth going for maybe a 14 TPI blade or if you have thicker material 100mm ( 4") or
more then a 6 TPI blade is a better option.
Rule of thumb is more teeth slower cutting better finish. less teeth faster cutting rougher finish.
All our stock bandsaw blades are REGULAR TOOTH which are ideal for general straight and curve cutting in most
materials. If you are experiencing clogging of your bandsaw blade then we can offer offer SKIP TOOTH blades which
allow better clearing of material when cutting. HOOK TOOTH blades are also available for very fast
aggressive straight cutting. If you require either SKIP TOOTH or HOOK TOOTH please feel free to contact
us.
The length of the Bandsaw blade that you require should be marked on your machine. If not we have listed many popular Bandsaw Blade lengths by their make and model number. If yours is not listed then just give a call 023 80578057 or email us with your model details.
